Choice of Two Collections of Catholic Burse: Vintage Burse from France discount - Catholic Burse to hold the Corporal - Vintage Catholic Burse -RT104

Two superb, varied collections of different examples of the Catholic Burse, which is used to carry the Corporal to the Church Alter during the Mass and other services. The linen lined interior is folded to form an envelope that can open to take the corporal and close neatly over it. Often a Burse may be hand made by a dedicated member of a particular Church or Congregation so become very personal items of that Church or Priest.

These two collections, one of four and and one of five have come from France and include different embroideries, silks and brocades; all were made between between 1910 and 1930, so have served a long and useful life and show signs of age and use. The hand embroidery, appliqué and trims have all been applied by hand and the collection shows the range of variations used in fabric and design. A hugely interesting selection for a collector of all religious, or just of Roman Catholic, artefacts. They would be suitable for a display with some protection to avoid any further deterioration to the fabrics and embroideries. A: - Group of Four: With a damask background of red or black, these four have had a brocade trim attached with hand stitching, all around the outer edge and then on the front, in the shape of a cross. The inside of each is in plain unbleached linen and the back is in a plain cor-ordinating cotton which is the same as the linen-lined, folded sides of the pockets. They measure 10" - 10.5" high by 8" wide. The depth of each one is under 0.5".

B :- Group of Five: A more varied group, these are the oldest and a couple are in fragile condition. A fragile cream silk with gorgeous embroidery; a cream damask with brocade cross; a cream tapestry; a green Art Deco design with bright embroidery and a smaller white burse that is just seven inches by six and a half inches; this is in white with a golden cord trim and a corded pocket at the front to carry the Pyx - the small container that carries the consecrated Host. This particular burse is 'portable' with a white silk carrying cord and was intended for use when travelling to carry the Eucharist to the sick and has a white twisted cord handle for transport.
