The 'Reliance' class medium endurance cutters were developed in the early 1960s as a replacement for the aging cutters that pre-dated WWII. This class was revolutionary compared to what had come before, featuring a fully welded steel hull, aluminum superstructure, helicopter deck, and sweeping lines. The Coast Guard's design office enlisted the help of renowned industrial designer Raymond Loewy to develop interior layouts and improve on-board habitability.
The first flight of cutters featured what was (for the time) a sophisticated CODAG propulsion plant with gas turbines and diesel engines operating in parallel to drive two controllable pitch wheels. Subsequent flights had a more conventional geared diesel propulsion system which was later retrofitted to the entire class. A total of sixteen Reliance class cutters were built at four different shipyards from 1964 - 1969.
