My story:
I am a super scary, spine shivering, first edition of Children Of The Stones by Jeremy Burnham & Trevor Ray. I was published by Carousel Books in 1977 in paperback format only. I am proud to be a rare, cult children's Classic. My seller is not aware of any other copies of this book for sale at the time of listing.
Condition summary:
I'm in an age toned but very good condition for a vintage paperback, with mostly minor wear. For specific condition points see below.
About me:
Children of the Stones was a British television drama serial for children, produced in 1976 and broadcast in the UK on their ITV network in early 1977. It's been described as the, “scariest programme ever made for children.”
Due to the success of the armchair thriller, which petrified the pants off 70's kids, my creepy, story was actually written afterwards by the serial's writers, Jeremy Burnham and Trevor Ray in 1977.
The story follows the lives of astrophysicist Adam Brake and his teenage son Matthew after they arrive in the small village of Milbury, which is built in the midst of a megalithic stone circle.
It results in a kind of teen, folk horror adventure.
My book cover is unforgettable - book cover art at its best with its horrific image of the stone like, dead figure at the forefront with the un-nerving head of the snake close up on the rear. In the back ground you see Mathew and Sandra with blacked out eyes and in the further distance you see a glimpse of the stone circle and the powerful Ray created by a mix of ancient ley lines and the right time!
An extra special addition are the small, black, ink line illustrations heading each chapter, which even retain the likenesses of the core tv cast.
The binding and pages of this book are in a highly respectable condition for a paper back of 45 years of age.
The pages are also beautifully age toned around the edges which add to the book's mystery and vintage appeal.
Inside me you will also find:
-an exciting prequel page
-a main title page
-date of publishing page
-simple title page
At my rear there are two pages of adverts for other Carousel books and an application form to send off for a Carousel newsletter - there was no internet in 1977!
My book has a blank area on the rear where other books have the price printed. Maybe I was an early proof edition?
As I am 45 years old I will have signs of age and use:
Paperback covers: mildly worn around the edges more so on the top front edge; spine ends and corners gently worn on their ends/tips; creased down the hinges; mildly rubbed but no major scuffs or markings. The inside covers have some age toning marks on them.
Book edges: very age toned with a small darker area of toning towards the hinge on the top edge. There are sone superficial surface scratches on the other edges.
Inside pages: all pages are age toned around their edges; there is more age toning on the first few and last few pages.
The mark on the top edge of the book is seen on the tops of the last section of the book p. 172-189 and the last couple of advert pages. See photo 10 - it's not hugely significant it's just a slightly darker toned patch than the rest of the general toning.
Binding: still strong with all pages intact.
A note from my seller:
I loved this book and tv series as a young person and I was beyond giddy to finally find this book again to add to a nostalgic, adult collection discount of my childhood books! This is the second one I've sourced, so it's up for grabs! Do have a ‘happy day.'
If anyone is interested I have a hardback US. first edition of Children of the Stone which is an ex-library book with expected library markings etc. I am happy to list it on request.
