“BAMBOO GARDEN” Wet felted wool hand or arm bag with circular bamboo handles. On the Royal Blue side of the bag, pure silk, in the form of silk Hankies*, are felted over the blue fine Merino sheep wool, creating a highly textured white flower image. On the opposite side of the bag, pre-felted abstract and whimsical garden images/shapes were layed atop the blue wool and then Margilan** silk covers the entire side, which was then Nuno*** Felted. The purse also features a large interior pocket (see the final photo, above).

The purse measures approximately 15 inches at it's widest points and9 inches tall in the center (from bottom to the opening), with the bag opening itself being 8 inches across when closed and the bamboo handles being 6 inches in diameter

As with all of my creations, this hand bag is handmade by me, in an original design, and is one of a kind!

*SILK HANKIES: also known as Mawata (Japanese, meaning “to spread around”), are made with a single silk cocoon that has been cooked in a degumming solution, had the pupae removed and the fiber carefully stretched out onto a square frame, creating a "hanky" of pure silk. They are painstakingly processed by hand, one square at time. Multiple hankies are stacked one atop the other and dried, forming thin layers of silk that can be peeled off one by one and used as desired. This form of silk was originally used as padding inside winter kimonos and other garments, as well as being spun into yarn.

**MARGILAN SILK: comes from the ancient city of Margilan, in Uzbekistan, often called the silk capital of Central Asia, which for centuries was an important trading hub due to its convenient location and abundance of sought-after goods, silk being a major item. To this day, a good deal of Margilan silk is made by hand: often, it is said, with the help of ancient secrets and techniques.

***NUNO FELTING: The name is derived from the Japanese word "nuno", meaning cloth. The technique bonds loose fiber, usually wool, into a sheer fabric such as silk gauze, creating a lightweight discount felt. The fibers can completely cover the background fabric, or they may be used as a decorative design that allows the backing fabric to show. Nuno felting creates an extremely versatile fabric and is particularly suitable for lightweight creations, allowing for movement and drape. The use of silk or other stable fabric in the felting process creates fabric that will not stretch out of shape. Fabrics such as nylon, muslin, or other open weaves can be used as the felting background, resulting in a wide range of textural effects and colors.
